Women’s History Month: The Power and Purpose of Women Over 40

Jennifer Sherak |

Women over 40 are redefining success in business, family, and community. With experience, confidence, and clarity, midlife women are building companies, leading organizations, and creating meaningful impact. Women’s History Month is a time to celebrate their strength, resilience, and continued growth.

Why Midlife Is a Turning Point for Women

I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately, how midlife isn’t a slowing down… it’s actually an acceleration.  Did you happen to watch the Oscars and see the amazingly talented, beautiful and commanding women over 40 dominating in design, acting, writing, and more? It’s amazing.

What I think is that by the time we reach our later 40s and beyond, we’ve lived enough life to understand who we are. We’ve navigated careers, relationships, families, setbacks, and reinventions. And something actually shifts. We stop asking for permission.
We start trusting our instincts.
We begin choosing ourselves more clearly and more confidently.

And that changes everything.

Women Over 40 Are Redefining Business and Leadership

There’s a quiet but powerful movement happening—and as I’m sure you’ve noticed, it’s being led by women in midlife.

Women over 40 are:

  • Launching businesses with purpose and meaning
  • Stepping into executive and leadership roles
  • Reinventing careers after decades of experience
  • Building brands rooted in authenticity and impact

And what makes these endeavors so powerful is perspective.  We’re not building from insecurity—we’re building from experience.

We understand resilience because we’ve lived it.
We understand value because we’ve earned it.
And we understand what matters—because we’ve seen what doesn’t.

My Story: Why I Chose to Build in Midlife

In my 20s after college, I didn’t set out to start a skincare company.  I wanted to, but I didn’t know how, I didn’t come from a family of entrepreneurs, I had a chemistry degree and wanted to formulate “things” and was quickly offered a position in pharmaceuticals.  That led to a career where I was deeply immersed in pharmaceutical science; developing and commercializing therapies, leading teams, and working at the highest levels of healthcare innovation.

But like so many women, I reached a point at the age of 53 where I paused and asked myself a simple question:

What’s next and what really matters now?

At the same time, I was experiencing something personal. My skin was changing.
What had worked for years… stopped working.

And as I started exploring the skincare landscape—going to Sephora, Ulta, Blue Mercury—I realized something surprising: There was very little designed specifically for women like me.

Women over 40.
Women navigating real biological changes.
Women who wanted effective, science-backed solutions, without complexity or compromise.

That realization stayed with me. Because I knew, from my background in chemistry, drug development, and peptides that the science existed. We had the ability to create high-performance formulations that could truly support skin in midlife.  They just… weren’t being made for us.

So I made a decision. Instead of continuing on the expected path, the path where I had been financially and professionally secure, I chose to build something new, something that reflected not just my expertise, but my experience as a woman in midlife.

And let’s be honest here, starting a company at any time is hard work… try starting at 53- it’s really hard work.  It’s both exhilarating and very humbling.  I always say when you own your own company, the highs are really high, and the lows are really low.

But, in midlife, you bring confidence, clarity, and resilience that wasn’t there before.  You also bring responsibility, perspective, and a deep desire to create something meaningful that helps others.

For me, this wasn’t just about skincare. It was about creating a brand that sees women.
That respects their intelligence. That supports their evolution. Because midlife women are not an afterthought.

We are leaders.
We are innovators.
We are just getting started.

The Joy of Midlife: More Than Just Achievement

Let’s talk about the fun of midlife, this is the part that I think often gets overlooked. Yes, midlife women are accomplishing incredible things, but it’s not just about productivity or success.

It’s about joy.

It’s about:

  • Deep, meaningful friendships
  • Stronger connections with family
  • A greater sense of self
  • The confidence to say no and the freedom that comes with it

There’s a richness to this stage of life that you simply can’t manufacture earlier. It’s lived. It’s earned. And it’s incredibly powerful.

 Balancing Business, Family, and Community

One of the most remarkable things about women in midlife is how multidimensional we are. We are often simultaneously:

  • Leading businesses or teams
  • Supporting our children (whether they’re young or grown!) and grandchildren
  • Caring for aging parents and siblings
  • Showing up for our communities
  • Maintaining friendships that have lasted decades

It’s a lot. But it’s also where our strength shines. We’ve developed the ability to navigate complexity with grace, to prioritize what matters, and to show up fully—without losing ourselves in the process (most of the time we don’t lose ourselves… if you have, refer back to my blog post on head spas if you feel you need some time to yourself!)

Women’s History Month: A Time to Celebrate and Support Each Other

Women’s History Month is a big reminder.
A reminder to:

  • Celebrate the women around us
  • Support women-owned businesses
  • Lift each other up in both big and small ways
  • Recognize the value of experience, wisdom, and resilience

Because when women support women, incredible things happen.

And if there’s one thing I know for sure, it’s this:

Midlife is not the beginning of the end, it’s the beginning of something deeper, stronger, and more intentional.

We are building.
We are leading.
We are evolving.

And we’re doing it with a level of confidence and compassion that only comes with time. So, this month (and every month) I hope you take a moment to recognize just how powerful this stage of life really is; because it’s taken us this long to become who we’ve always been.

 With grace and love,

Jen
