I want to give you the science, in plain terms, so you can read a label with confidence and decide what truly belongs in your routine.
What are peptides?
Peptides are short chains of amino acids, the same building blocks your body uses to make proteins like collagen and elastin. In your skin, peptides act as messengers. They carry instructions that tell your cells what to do, such as supporting the pathways that increase collagen and elastin, calming the look of irritation, or reinforcing the barrier.
Here is the part most articles leave out, and the part that matters most. Peptides can be naturally occurring, made by your own body, or they can be created in a laboratory. Both are real peptides. The difference lies in how lab-made versions can be designed very precisely to do specific things.
When peptides are made in the lab, the most sophisticated of them are biomimetic, which means they are engineered to mimic the structure of signals your skin already recognizes. Because a biomimetic peptide can be built sequence by sequence, it can be aimed at a specific job: one peptide to support firmness, another to soften the appearance of expression lines, another to encourage a more even tone. A biomimetic peptide is, in essence, a single defined molecule, at a known concentration, with a known target. That precision is the genius of peptide science and why I believe in them for skincare.
A note on how peptides actually work
You will sometimes read that peptides simply sink deep into the skin. The truth is more elegant. Most peptides do their work by signaling. They interact with receptors on your skin cells and set off a cascade that supports renewal from within. Whether a particular peptide travels deeper depends on its size, its charge, and the delivery system carrying it. This is exactly why formulation, and not the ingredient list alone, separates skincare that performs from skincare that merely sounds impressive. The molecule matters. How it is delivered matters just as much.
What are exosomes?
Exosomes are quite different. They are not chains of amino acids. They are tiny vesicles, essentially fluid-filled pouches, that cells release to communicate with one another. Each vesicle carries a mixed cargo of proteins, lipids, growth factors, and genetic material such as RNA. When that parcel reaches another cell, it can signal that cell to repair, regenerate, and support the production of collagen and elastin.
Where do exosomes come from? Because nearly every cell releases them, they can be sourced in two broad ways. Human-derived exosomes are typically grown from stem cells or platelets, often using cells obtained from regulated blood banks, then cultured, purified, and freeze-dried into a powder. Plant-derived exosomes are harvested from botanical sources such as cica, green tea, ginger, or grape and tend to be gentler and more affordable. The source matters because it shapes what each exosome carries and how it behaves.
Here is the practical reality. Truly isolated, well-characterized exosomes do exist, most often in premium, professional-grade serums. The careful manufacturing behind them makes them costly to produce. That is one reason many products that mention exosomes rely instead on plant-derived versions or on conditioned media (I know, what? I’ll explain in a minute). In professional settings, you will also encounter platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, where a small amount of your own blood is drawn, concentrated, and applied to the skin, frequently after microneedling. PRP delivers your own growth factors and is a close cousin of exosome therapy, yet it is not the same as a purified exosome, and its strength varies from one person to the next.
The science here is genuinely exciting and deserves continued research. Exosomes are known to be regenerative, and the science is advancing quickly.
The label problem, and how to know what’s in the product
This is where a trained eye becomes useful. Many products are labeled as containing peptides or exosomes, yet the words on the front of the bottle or box do not always describe what is truly inside.
Take peptides. So many products put the word peptides front and center, yet the ingredient list is where the truth lives. You might spot hydrolyzed collagen, which sounds wonderful. It is collagen broken into smaller fragments. While it hydrates and softens beautifully on the surface, it does not behave like a targeted signal peptide, the kind engineered to communicate with your cells. The most reliable sign of a true peptide is a specific, named molecule, often with a number, like hexapeptide-2 or palmitoyl tripeptide-1. In short, the wording on the front of a bottle does not always tell the full story. It may sound lovely, but the ingredient list is where the true form and function live. With exosomes, the same caution applies for a different reason. There is a meaningful difference between a true, isolated exosome and conditioned media. Many products labeled as containing exosomes actually contain conditioned media, the nutrient broth in which cells are grown, which likely holds some exosomes alongside a mixture of other cellular material. The difficulty is not that this material is worthless. The difficulty is that you cannot easily know how many exosomes are present, what they are signaling for, or how stable and active they remain once applied. So, again, look at the ingredient list. If you see the word exosome on the list, often with its source in front of it, for example, Human Adipose Stromal Cell Exosomes, then the exosomes have been processed and isolated, and that is what you are getting. If instead you see the word media, as in Conditioned Media, the exosomes have not been isolated. You are getting the nutrient broth the cells were grown in, a mixture that may hold some exosomes alongside a good deal of other material. The difficulty is that you cannot easily know how many exosomes are present, what they are signaling for, or how stable and active they remain once applied. A 2026 review in Dermatological Reviews stated it plainly: products labeled as exosomes are not interchangeable, and their content and quality cannot be assumed from the marketing.
